Will the Boatrax work on my Boat?

The answer is almost always yes. If your boat is new or a couple of years old, all of the electronics are most likely running on the NMEA 2000. Our system is directly compatible and easy to install. If your boat is a little older, you can still most likely use the Boatrax Box, you would just need an adaptor. Feel free to contact for more information.

What if my engines are not on NMEA?

If you are not sure if your engines are on NMEA you can get in touch with us and we will help you get a quote for a gateway to get your engines to transmit data and NMEA and compatible with our Boatrax solution

How does the real-time functionality work?

The Boatrax Box reads all the data and messages generated by your boat every 5 seconds and transmits all that information through the cellular network to our secure cloud servers. The data is accessible in real-time through our mobile app. You will be able to see information like location, heading, depth, RPMs, engine temp, oil pressure and battery voltage in real-time..

What logs are stored and why are they important?

Our system stores everything that goes on with your engines and electronics automatically. You can also input and store any expenses and services relating to your boat. The importance of these logs is that it allows you and your service professionals to spot issues before they get too big and become expensive problems. They also help show how well you have taken care of your boat, which increases its resale value.

Where do I see my engine performance data?

You can see your boat’s performance data through our mobile app under historical logs and similarly in the web app at

Will my insurance give me a discount for installing this solution?

You may qualify for insurance discount if you purchase our satellite bundle, once you do let your insurance know to see if you qualify for a discount

How can I set a geofence?

Geofences can be set in our mobile app under the notifications tab

Can I set more than one geofence at a time?

Yes you can easily set multiple geofence and alerts in your Boatrax mobile app

How is the device powered?

Our device can be powered two ways. It is able to draw power directly from the NMEA network or alternatively it can be connected to a different 12V power source like a battery to make sure it is always on. Just make sure to wire it correctly with a power isolator to connect to the NMEA network.

Do I need technical knowledge to install?

We recommend that you have your technician installs the Boatrax Box on your boat. It is not a difficult installation and often just takes a few minutes. Since you are dealing with sensitive and expensive electronics, it is always safer to have a professional install it.

Do I need to splice any cables?

No cable splicing with Boatrax. Everything is set up to wire easily into the NMEA network.

How do I connect other sensors that are not on NMEA?

To monitor a bilge or any other on/off digital sensor all you need to do is to connect the correct pins from the sensor array to the on/off system that you want to monitor.

What is included with my purchase of the Boatrax device?

In the box you will receive: The Boatrax device, Cell antenna, GPS antenna, NMEA Tee, NMEA Power Isolator, NMEA Drop Cable (3ft), Boatrax Sticker, Installation Instructions.

Where should I mount the device?

When think about where to mount the device there is two main factors to take into consideration, proximity to a 12-24V power source and the NMEA network. In most boats the ideal location is inside the console/helm next to your electronics.

Does antenna placement matter?

It is very important that the antennas are as far away as possible from other cables and metal objects that can cause signal interference. Please note that for best performance the GPS antenna needs to be facing the sky

The units has three LED indicators. Power (Red), NMEA (Yellow), NET (Green).Red off means it may not be powered correctly. Please check all connections are secure and NMEA Tees are aligned. If the device is wired to draw power from the network then make sure the electronics or whichever breaker power the NMEA network has power. If everything looks good then proceed to reset unit through by clicking the reset button with a small paper clip twice.Yellow off means it is not getting any reading from the NMEA network. Proceed to check all connections are secure and NMEA Tees are aligned. Also make sure the NMEA network is powered (possibly through your electronics switch). If everything looks good, then proceed to reset unit through by clicking the reset button with a small paper clip twice.Green if off means it has lost connectivity and most likely an antenna issue, confirm antenna is attached correctly to the cell port and is clear of any possible interference. If after a few minutes the unit does not come back online, then proceed to reset unit through by clicking the reset button with a small paper clip twice.
